Intranet for the NNSA Service Center in Oakland
The Oakland Service Center intranet site served as a digital repository for internal documents, forms and procedures. I was tasked to rebuild the intranet, unify the look and feel of the site, and reorganize the site to make it easier for users to find information without needing a search function.
This intranet site is not available to the general public. Click on the thumbnails to view screenshots of the site.
The Design
The main challenge of this design was the information architecture. Lack of technical resources meant no search functionality, so users had to be able to find information by selecting link on the home page. The goal was to make sure users were able to get the information they sought within three clicks. This was accomplished by organizing links into three categories that served as the global navigation of the site.
The home page was designed as a portal page featuring all the links of the global navigation as well as links to external sites. The space at the top left of the content area was reserved for announcements and seasonal images. The home page featured a gelatin layout while the underlying pages featured a two-column liquid layout. The sandy color palette provided visual interest without distracting from the content.
The Code
The site was developed using transitional XHTML for structure and CSS Level 2 for layout and presentation. Javascript includes rendered the header, footer and global navigation.
